Voting rights trial hears of racism against Indians
Racism and discrimination against Indians remains prevalent in Fremont County, Wyoming, a witness testified in a voting rights trial on Monday.

Michelle Hoffman, the superintendent of schools on the Wind River Reservation, said she has heard racial slurs used numerous times against Indians. She has witnessed Indians being treated differently in their own county.

"Ignorance is born of fear, fear of the unknown," Hoffman testified, The Jackson Hole Star-Tribune reported.

Hoffman was called by the plaintiffs in their case against Fremont County. Five Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribal members say the county's at-large system dilutes the Indian vote.

Hoffman ran as a Democrat in 2006 for superintendent of public instruction. Living on the reservation was a strike against her, she said.
