The Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska is looking off reservation in hopes of expanding its economic horizons.
The tribe operates a casino, a convenience store and other businesses on the reservation. But its remote location and small population mean opportunities exist elsewhere in the state.
In South Yankton, about 15 miles from the reservation, the tribe opened a convenience store. The tribe wants the seven-acre site be placed in trust, a request that officials in Cedar County won't oppose.
Tribal leaders are considering other population centers as well. "We have Shop E-Z in South Yankton, but I envision that we move ahead further with projects in cities like Sioux Falls, Sioux City and Omaha," chairman Roger Trudell told The Yankton Daily Press.
The tribe will also make use of a $1 million grant from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota to support community programs and economic development.
