Code Talker monument in Arizona excludes Hopis

An Arizona Senate Committee rejected a proposal to include Hopis and other Native Americans in a Code Talker monument planned for Phoenix.

Philip Quochytewa, a Hopi tribal council member and a Vietnam veteran, asked lawmakers not to overlook the contributions of other Native soldiers. "It's only fair that other Native American code talkers are treated with the same dignity and respect," he said, Cronkite News Service reported.

But lawmakers said they wouldn't rename the Navajo code talkers monument to the Arizona code talkers monument. "Life's not fair. But in this respect, in my opinion, the Navajos are the quarterback. They are the ones who worked this through," said Sen. Jake Flake, a Republican.

The Senate Committee on Government also approved a resolution calling on the U.S. Postal Service to create stamps for the Navajo Code Talkers.
