Marilyn John, a Bear Clan Mother from the Oneida Nation of New York, died on Tuesday. She was 61.
John was involved in nearly every major issue the tribe has faced in the past 15 years. She supported the tribe's land claim, backed efforts to preserve the Oneida language and culture and worked with local governments on projects.
"An instrumental member of the nation government, the character and integrity she imparted, her willful spirit, her love for children, and her inspiring presence will be greatly missed," the tribe said in a statement.
