Navajo Nation Council opens winter session

The Navajo Nation Council opened its winter session on Monday, with delegates electing Lawrence Morgan for a third term as Speaker.

Morgan beat four other delegates for the position. He has served as Speaker since 2003.

On the opening day, the council heard from President Joe Shirley Jr., who said gaming remains a top priority. Delegates also heard updates from the Navajo Nation Supreme Court and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Other items on the agenda for the session include a proposal to increase the sales tax by 1 percent. The tax, currently at 3 percent, generated $15.8 million in fiscal year 2006.
