Tribe seeks removal of indicted school board members

The chairman of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation has asked North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven to remove three school board members who were indicted for stealing from a school on the Fort Berthold Reservation.

Chairman Marcus Wells Jr. said Melissa and Hank Starr and Darcy Lone Bear refuse to resign even after the tribe suspended them. They were indicted for conspiring to steal $665,000 from the Twin Buttes School.

The school receives federal and state funds, so Wells has asked Hoeven to intervene. The state attorney general is preparing a complaint.

The school board members, as well as others connected to the scheme, go on trial May 1.
