Man charged with slaying of Native woman

A Canadian man was charged with the murder of Rachel Quinney, a 19-year-old Native woman who was working on the streets as a prostitute.

Quinney was from the Frog Lake First Nation, a Cree community in Alberta. After moving to Edmonton, she became involved in the sex trade industry at a young age.

Eventually, she went missing in May 2004. Her badly beating body was found a month later outside of town.

Thomas George Svekla, 38, now faces charges of second-degree murder and offering an indignity to a human body. He has already been charged for the death of another sex trade worker.
