Tribes off to Schwarzenegger inauguration

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) has been at odds with tribes since the start of his political career in 2003 but now he's inviting them to his inaugural celebration.

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and the Pechanga Band of Luiseo Indians are among the guests for the two days of festivities in Sacramento, the state Capitol. That marks a major turnaround from the days when both tribes raised millions to defeat Schwarzenegger's campaigns.

"We have lines of communication open with him now," a spokesperson for the Agua Caliente Band told The Riverside Press-Enterprise.

The Agua Caliente Band and the Pechanga Band were among six tribes that recently signed gaming compacts with Schwarzenegger. The deals are opposed by Democrats and labor unions.
