Editorial: Mohegan Tribe builds partnership with city

"The $2 million Sachem Fund partnership between the Norwich City Council and the Mohegan Tribal Council is as innovative as it should be beneficial.

The city and tribe have forged a trusting and respectful relationship, most recently seen by the smoothly executed demolition of the former Masonic Temple in October. That Washington Street property will become a park to honor the sacred Mohegan burial ground there.

That relationship is now a partnership that will last at least five years. Pending approval of the city council tonight -- the Mohegans have already given their OK -- each side will contribute $200,000 a year for five years to focus on the economic development of the city. That could mean anything from fixing blighted buildings to creating more cultural celebrations -- a must considering the city's growing diversity."
