South Dakota Indians praise Sen. Johnson's work

South Dakota Indians say Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota) has been a strong advocate for their needs.

Johnson serves on the Indian Affairs and Appropriations committees. He has used both positions to ensure tribal communities receive funds for their programs.

"A lot of our education, as well as health care funding, comes from this," Sylvan White Hat Sr. White Hat, 59, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, told The Minneapolis Star Tribune. "With him on the committee, we have some assurance that someone is caring."

The Oglala Sioux Tribe has Johnson to thank for the Mni Wiconi water project, said the lead engineer for the tribe. Johnson has ensured the project receives funding and is expected to introduce a bill next year to keep the money flowing.
