Oglala Sioux Tribe swearing-in ceremony, or not

Newly elected leaders of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota hope they will be sworn into office today but the current president says that won't be happening.

President Alex White Plume says the results of the November 7 election are null and void. He says the tribe has scheduled a new primary and general election for spring 2007.

But William "Shorty" Brewer, who won the vice president's seat, says he and the other newly elected leaders will show up today for their swearing-in ceremony. John Yellow Bird Steele was elected president.

Although White Plume had finished first in the primary, he wasn't on the November 7 ballot. The tribe's election board found an old criminal conviction on his record just days before the election and took him off the ballot.
