Lumbee Tribe elects five newcomers to council

Members of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina elected five newcomers to the 21-seat council.

Two winners are replacing their husbands. Audrey Hunt won the seat held by Larece Hunt, who was barred by tribal law from serving more than two consecutive terms.

Helen Locklear won the seat held by her husband, Sanford Locklear, who died in August. "I would like to carry his legacy on. I want to continue the path that he had, to help the Lumbee people," Locklear told The Fayetteville Observer.

Other winners were Laura Sampson, James Taft Smith and Bradley McMillian.
