Supreme Court reinstates Arizona voter ID rules

The U.S. Supreme Court reinstated Arizona's voter identification rules on Friday in a lawsuit that the Navajo Nation and other tribes joined.

The unanimous decision was not on the merits of requiring voters to present photo ID at the polls. Rather, the court said it was in the best interest of the state to proceed with the election on November 7 as planned.

Tribes opposes the voter ID rules, saying they would disenfranchise tribal members without photo identification or proof of citizenship. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals agreed and blocked the state from implementing them.

The Supreme Court's unsigned decision vacated the 9th Circuit's injunction.
