Navajo voters polled outside Wal-Mart in Gallup

A random poll of 35 Navajos outside of the Wal-Mart in Gallup, New Mexico, found presidential candidate Linda Lovejoy winning by three votes.

Of the 35 tribal members interviewed by The Gallup Independent, 15 said they would vote for Lovejoy, who is seeking to be the tribe's first female leader. "Because she's a woman, that's why," said one man. "Let's see what a woman will do; I'm just curious." Said another man Because she is a smart woman."

Incumbent president Joe Shirley Jr. wasn't far behind with 12 votes. "Mr. Shirley has more experience with the Navajo Nation and he talks fluent Navajo," said one woman. "He cares about our Navajo elderly." Another woman: "If it wasn't for him, I don't know where I'd be."

The election is November 7.
