The candidates for president of the Navajo Nation debated at Arizona State University on Tuesday.

Incumbent Joe Shirley Jr. is being challenged by Linda Lovejoy, who would be the tribe's first female president if elected. Shirley is seeking his second term.

Both Shirley, an ASU alumnus, and Lovejoy emphasized education. They also cited the need to improve economic opportunities on the reservation.

More than 400 people attended the debate. The election takes place November 7.
