A $400,000 grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will be used to combat suicide among young people in South Dakota.

The grant enables Sinte Gleska University on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation and Wakanyja Pawicayapi on the Pine Ridge Reservation to partner with the state. The tribes will implement a program to prevent suicide among people ages 14 to 24.

In South Dakota, 15 percent of suicide cases are American Indians. Suicide rates in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa are the highest in Indian Country.
