Abramoff Scandal
Republicans ask Ney to resign after guilty plea

Outgoing Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio) is rejecting calls from his party to resign from Congress after pleading guilty for his role in the Jack Abramoff scandal.

Ney plans to hold onto his seat until the end of January 2007. He will continue to draw his $165,200 salary unless the chamber acts against him.

Ironically, Ney voted four months ago to deny pension benefits to members of Congress who have been convicted of a felony related to their official duties, The Columbus Dispatch reported. Although the bill hasn't cleared Congress, Ney said he was "proud to help" pass the reform, the paper said.

Ney pleaded guilty to two counts. He admitted taking gifts in exchange for legislative favors for Abramoff's tribal and other clients.
