Alaska Native village buys farm to restore bison

The Stevens Village tribal council dedicated a farm that will be used to restore and raise a small herd of bison.

The Athabaskan tribe bought the 2,000-acre farm in 2004 with a federal loan. The farm is home to a herd of about 40 bison, whose meat will supply villagers with food. The goal is to grow the herd to about 200 animals.

The farm is about 200 miles from the village. The tribe still hopes to reintroduce the rare wood bison closer to home.
