Meskwaki Tribe's new police force hits the streets

The Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa will have its own police force for the first time since the 1930s.

The six officers start their patrols on Friday. A retired Des Moines lieutenant was hired as the tribe's first police chief.

The officers will carry out tribal laws. State and federal authorities will continue to handle violent crimes, drug and firearms offenses.

The 1,400-member tribe lives in a 7,000-acre reservation east of Tama.
