Federal Register: Nominations for NAGPRA panel

The National Park Service is soliciting nominations for two members of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Review Committee, according to a Federal Register notice published on Thursday.

One member will be selected from nominations made by tribes, Native Hawaiian organizations and traditional leaders. The other member will be selected from nominations submitted by national museum organizations and scientific organizations.

Among other tasks, the NAGPRA review committee is charged with monitoring the NAGPRA inventory and identification process; reviewing and making findings related to the identity or cultural affiliation of cultural items, or the return of such items; and compiling an inventory of culturally unidentifiable human remains and developing a process for disposition of such remains.

Nominations must be received by October 16, 2006. The Interior Secretary will make the final selection.
