Fire Thunder reinstated after being impeached

Cecelia Fire Thunder was reinstated as president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, Indian Country Today reports.

Fire Thunder filed a lawsuit in tribal court. She says the tribal council didn't follow procedure when it voted to oust her on June 29.

The council suspended Fire Thunder, the first woman president of the tribe, for her public comments against the state's abortion ban. The complaint accused her of illegally raising funds for a women's client on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

The council subsequently voted to ban abortions on the reservation. A petition is underway to amend the tribal constitution to outlaw abortion.

Fire Thunder was reinstated pending another hearing on her impeachment.
