Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe to meet over recognition
Friday, July 14, 2006

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts is headed to private discussions with the town of Mashpee over the tribe's pending federal recognition.

The tribe pledges it won't seek to establish a casino on Cape Cod or make land claims. The tribe's top priorities are housing, education, health care and conservation.

The town has been requesting some form of discussion with the tribe. The town has held off endorsing the tribe's recognition.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs ruled in favor of the tribe in March. A final decision is due in March 2007.
