Lumbee recognition bill to get July 12 hearing

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a hearing July 12 on a bill to recognize the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.

Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R) introduced S.660 to recognize the tribe . Rep. Mike McIntyre (D) introduced a companion bill, H.R.21.

Both measures would recognize the tribe, the largest east of the Mississippi. The Lumbees are currently subject to a termination-era law that blocks their status as a full tribe.

A rival bill, H.R.4171, would lift the termination-era law and require the tribe to go through the Bureau of Indian Affairs for recognition. The bill is supported by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the only federally recognized tribe in North Carolina.
