Abramoff Scandal
Senate Indian Affairs investigator testifies

An investigator for the Senate Indian Affairs Committee testified on Thursday as the government's final witness against a former Bush administration official on trial for allegedly lying about his dealings with Jack Abramoff.

Brian Parker said he asked David Safavian, a former General Services Administration chief of staff, about an August 2002 golf outing to Scotland. In a letter to the committee, Safavian said he paid his own way -- including air fare, lodging and other expenses.

It turns out that Safavian didn't pay for air fare and the $3,100 check he wrote to Abramoff was far below the actual cost. Abramoff used tribal money to fund part of the trip.

Parker said Safavian's statements were a contradiction. He also said Safavian failed to mention Abramoff was interested in two GSA properties.

The government rested its case after Parker testified. Safavian's defense will begin today.
