Gila River committee rejects freeway study

A legislative committee of the Gila River Indian Community unanimously rejected a study of a proposed freeway on the reservation near Phoenix, Arizona.

The state of Arizona wants to build a portion of a new highway on the reservation. Many tribal members are against the idea but tribal Gov. William Rhodes, who took office earlier this year, wants it put to a vote.

In 2001, the tribal council adopted a resolution against the freeway or a study of the freeway. The resolution was affirmed last year.
