Alaska Natives seek $100M for Exxon Valdez oil spill

Alaska Natives affected by the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill are asking the federal government to seek $100 million from the company for damage to their fishing and hunting grounds.
The Alaska Intertribal Council and the Chugach Regional Resources Commission filed a petition with the Interior Department and the Justice Department. It asks the agencies to seek the $100 million as part of a settlement already reached with Exxon.
The settlement leaves room for a "reopener" but only the state of Alaska or the federal government can reopen the deal. The deadline to seek the money is June 1.
