Yellow Bird: The Westminster Rez Dogs Show

"My family on the reservation would scoff at my interest in the pampered and indulged show dogs of the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship and the Westminster Kennel Club Show, the Super Bowl of dog shows.

The family's experience with pets -- dogs particularly -- is in letting them roam. Blow-drying their fur, curling and spraying their hair or feeding them treats from our mouths are out.

Me? I'm fascinated by all these exceptional breeds. There is just something about the way they perform, how they smile or stand at attention -- head high, legs slightly back and tail curled, beautiful coats or long silky hair coifed by the best hair stylists.

Our family and tribe always had dogs. This probably stemmed from a love of those animals handed down through many, many generations. Most tribes had dogs in their villages and camps because dogs were excellent guardians.

My parents never set out to have a dog in the family, but inevitably, one of us kids would bring home a puppy that someone gave us. Unfortunately, since there were 13 of us, one youngster after another would come home with a dog and argue, "Why can't I have a dog? Donnie has one." So, Mom, to be fair, let us keep most of them."
