The federal government has distributed bison meat, head and hides from slaughtered Yellowstone National Park bison to 28 tribes, The Billings Gazette reports.

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has assumed a lead role in moving the animals to meat processing plants in Montana and Idaho. The agency has spent than $181,000 to sent about 800 bison to slaughter.

A spokesperson for APHIS said 28 tribes in Montana, Minnesota, Michigan, Nevada, Idaho, California and other states received bison meat and bison parts.
