Supreme Court asked to revive Cayuga land claim
Wednesday, February 8, 2006

The U.S. Supreme Court is being asked to revive the 64,000-acre Cayuga land claim in New York.

The Cayuga Nation of New York and the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma filed a petition to review a 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals decision that dismissed the claim. The court ruled 2-1 that the tribes waited too long to file the case and threw out a $247.9 million judgment.

The tribes are joined in the appeal by the Department of Justice, which filed a separate petition to review the case. A response from the New York defendants is due March 8 [Supreme Court Docket Sheet: No. 05-982].
