Oneida Nation vows fight over trust land application

The Oneida Nation of New York plans to use the voting power of its employees to back up its controversial land-into-trust application.

Local and state officials have come out against the tribe's request to have more than 17,000 acres in two counties placed in trust. The tribe says its 4,600 employees are aware of the controversy taking place.

"The region's representatives at the federal, state and local levels had better understand that the Nation's employees are informed, motivated, and engaged politically, and are now ready to hold their elected representatives accountable for their votes, statements and actions," Diane Stirling, the tribe's governmental relations director, said.

The tribe submitted the application after the U.S. Supreme Court, in a decision from last March, said the tribe had to go through the land-into-trust process before claiming sovereignty on its properties.

Citing the decision, local governments have hit the tribe with millions of dollars in property tax bills. But a federal judge has blocked one county from foreclosing on the tribe's land.

The tribe is also negotiating agreements to pay the taxed pending acquisition of the land in trust.
