Indian candidate for governor trails in campaign funds

Ron Volesky, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe who is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor of South Dakota, only raised $2,715 in contributions as of 2005.

That amount pales in comparison to the amount raised by Gov. Mike Rounds (R). According to his campaign finance report, he had $1.44 million at the end of 2005, up from $810,000 at the end of 2004.

Volesky previously sought the Democratic nomination for governor in 2002 and ran for attorney general against Republican Larry Long the same year. He lost both races and previously lost a shot at the U.S. Congress.

Rounds, who is seeking re-election, enjoys support among some tribal leaders for improving state-tribal relations.
