Schaghticoke chief blasts tribes, state for denial

Gov. Jodi Rell | Sens. Dodd, Lieberman
Richard Velky, the chief of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation of Connecticut, is blasting the state and other tribes after being denied recognition by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Velky accused state officials of improper lobbying of the Interior Department or the White House. He said the state encouraged the Congressional delegation to oppose the tribe's recognition.

Velky also said his tribe didn't receive any support from the two other federally-recognized tribes in the state. He said the Mohegan Tribe and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation are only protecting their gaming interests. The two tribes operate the largest casinos in the world and gained federal recognition within the last two decades.

The Schaghticokes learned Wednesday that it was denied recognition. The BIA also rejected the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation.
