UKB banishes Chad Smith, Swimmer called a target

The United Keetoowah Band banished Cherokee Nation Chief Chad Smith on Saturday, with one council member wishing that the UKB had the power to punish other Cherokee leaders, including Ross Swimmer, Pat Ragsdale and Wilma Mankiller.

Smith was the first person removed under the UKB's new banishment code. Canadian District Representative Eddie Sacks said Swimmer, Ragsdale and Mankiller should be punished for trying to eliminate the UKB.

Swimmer, a former Cherokee chief, is currently the Special Trustee at the Interior Department. Ragsdale, a former Cherokee marshal service director, is the director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Mankiller was the first woman Cherokee chief.
