Red Lake teachers, staff wary of return to school

Some teachers and staff at the high school on the Red Lake Reservation in Minnesota are worried that they might never be able to go back to work after the March 21, 2005, shootings.

Keith Lussier, a cultural counselor at Red Lake High School, thinks the school is safe. But he is worried about the emotional toll the shootings have taken. He witnessed the shootings and tended to some of the wounded.

Missy Dodds, a math teacher, also witnessed the shootings. Some of the students in her classroom were killed by Jeff Weise, 16. She said he pointed the gun at her.

Lee Ann Grant, a security guard, ran as soon she saw Weise approach the school. She was hospitalized on her 21st birthday last week at a psychiatric ward. "I just have these moments when I lose it," Grant told The Minneapolis Star Tribune. "I can't help it."

Lussier, Dodds and Grant asked for extended leave from the school district. But they were denied because the policy reportedly limits leave to about 35 days.
