UKB sets hearing for removal of Cherokee Chad Smith
Tuesday, August 23, 2005

Cherokee Nation Chief Chad Smith says he will fight an attempt to remove him from the rolls of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokees.

Smith is enrolled in both the Cherokee Nation and the UKB. He says his grandmother started the UKB in the 1940s to help Cherokees obtain more federal funds.

But UKB leaders say Smith is out to destroy the Keetoowahs. The Cherokee Nation is currently fighting a trust land application by the much-smaller UKB.

A hearing to discuss Smith's status will be held September 3, the same day of the Cherokee National Holiday. Smith is set to deliver the State of the Nation address.
