NAJA elects new leaders at annual conference

The Native American Journalists Association elected new leaders at its 21st annual convention in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Mike Kellogg, a member of the Navajo Nation and publisher of the News Press in Stillwater, Oklahoma, was elected president. "With so many Native issues at the forefront -- tribal economic development, the NCAA's mascot decision, and the efforts of so many tribes to protect their sovereignty -- NAJA will continue its role as a watchdog, making sure these issues are covered accurately," he said.

Marley Shebala, Navajo and Zuni, was elected vice president. She is an investigative reporter for the Navajo Times, the newspaper of the Navajo Nation.

Cristina Azocar, a member of the Upper Mattaponi Tribe of the Powhattan Nation and the director of the Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism at San Francisco State University, was elected treasurer. The new secretary is Dan Lewerenz, a member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska and a correspondent for the Associated Press.
