Reagan-era documents from Roberts released
Wednesday, July 27, 2005

The National Archives on Tuesday released about 15,000 pages of documents related to U.S. Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. and his work at the Department of Justice during the Reagan administration.

The documents are only available for in-person viewing. According to news reports, they show that Roberts, as a special assistant, was heavily involved in debates on legal issues including abortion, busing, school prayer and sex discrimination.

The Bush administration won't allow the Archives to releasing information from Roberts' work as deputy solicitor general from 1989 to 1993. During this time, Duro v. Reina, a challenge to tribal criminal jurisdiction over all Indians, went before the Supreme Court. The White House also won't release Roberts' tax documents.

The Senate has yet to schedule confirmation hearings for Roberts. A dispute between Republicans and Democrats has stalled over timing, The New York Times reported.
