Proposal would return land to North Dakota tribe

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold public hearings next month on a proposal to return up to 36,000 acres to the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of North Dakota.

More than 150,000 acres on the Fort Berthold Reservation were flooded more than 50 years ago to make way for a Missouri River dam. The tribe would recover a portion of those lands that could help oil and gas and agricultural development.

The land is located on the shores of Lake Sakakawea.
