SIPI spent $100K on golf facilities despite deficit
Monday, April 4, 2005
The Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in New Mexico approved $200,000 for a driving range and putting green despite being $1 million in the red, The Albuquerque Journal reports.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs noticed the huge expenditure when it conducted a review of SIPI's budget last year. So the BIA put together a team to investigate and found some financial mismanagement, the director of the Office of Indian Education Programs said.
SIPI has since laid off 29 out of 130 people and has undergone a reorganization in hopes of patching up its budget holes. Employees have been told to take 23 days of unpaid leave before September.
