Wisconsin tribal leader seeks end to Indian mascots

Raymond DePerry, the chairman of the Red Cliff Chippewa Tribe and the president of the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, called on the Wisconsin Legislature to ban the use of Indians as mascots and logos in public schools.

DePerry said the use of Indians as symbols was offensive. He also criticized the use of "squaw" in place names around the state.

DePerry made his comments during the first-ever State of the Tribes address at the state capitol on Tuesday.
