Campo Band signs contract for proposed landfill

The Campo Band of Kumeyaay Indians of California has approved a contract to build the first large-scale commercial landfill on Indian land.

The tribe signed an agreement with BLT Enterprises for a 400-acre landfill on the reservation. Chairman Harry Paul Cuero Jr. said it would provide economic stability for the tribe.

The dump site would be located near the San Luis Rey River and not far from the Pala Band's casino. The Pala Band is opposing a proposed landfill near the river.
