Three tribes diversify holdings with new hotel

Three tribes say a new $53 million hotel in California's state capitol is an important step in the diversification of their economies.

The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians and the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin operate successful gaming operations. But they see the hotel as a way to branch out and use the revenues to invest in other projects.

The tribes will own 62 percent of the Residence Inn by Marriott in Sacramento. It is the second hotel project for the three tribes, who partnered with another Wisconsin tribe for a Marriott in Washington, D.C.
