Maine designates Penobscot Nation as drug importer

The state of Maine has designated the Penobscot Nation as a drug importer in a unique partnership aimed at generating revenue for the tribe while providing low-cost prescription drugs to consumers.

The state gave the tribe $400,000 to build a warehouse and set up a distribution program. But the state said it needs the federal government's approval to begin importing drugs from Canada.

Federal officials have been looking at a business on the Seneca Nation in New York that imports drugs. Canada's prices for popular prescriptions are, in some case, much lower than American prices.
