Summit focuses on restoring indigenous diet

The Native Food Summit was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, recently to focus on restoring the foods that were once part of the indigenous diet.

The summit was sponsored by the First Nations Development Institute. It brought tribal leaders, health experts and Native food advocates together to discuss how to reintroduce corn, squash, beans, bison and other foods to Native people.

Health experts say the declining health of Native people, including diseases like diabetes, can be traced to the loss of indigenous foods.
