The Hawaii Republican Party filed a lawsuit on Friday against the candidacy of Native man who was born in Canada but lacks official U.S. citizenship.
Cort Gallup, a Cree, says he doesn't have to prove his citizenship. He cites court rulings that allow Canadian Natives free passage to the U.S.
The Hawaii GOP sees it differently. They say Gallup is ineligible to run for the state Legislature because he is not a naturalized citizen.
"They�re not only taking away my rights but the rights of the voters to choose," Gallup told The Maui News. "They�re saying Native Americans cannot vote."
