Artifact amnesty program deemed a success

A 90-day amnesty program in four states has resulted in the return of remains and artifacts.

Federal authorities in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado allowed people to return artifacts with no questions asked. Tribes supported the effort and sought specific sacred and ceremonial items.

A Bureau of Indian Affairs special agent who has tracked down stolen artifacts said the program was a success because people are finding out about the law. The last day to participate is Wednesday.
