A member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe is suing Iowa State University for denying him tenure.

Lawrence Gross, a professor in American Indian studies, said he was denied because he is Indian and because he advocates for Indian causes. He was told he was going to be fired in May 2005.

The school says its decision was based on Gross' academics, not his race. According to the Associated Press, a consultant who reviewed Gross' work claimed he was "haunted" by his Indian heritage.
