Tribal tax-exempt bond bill pushed in California

A bill in California would make it easier for tribes to issue tax-exempt bonds just like other governments.

The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians is backing the bill. The tribe was the first in the state to finance tax-exempt bonds for its casino project. Just last week, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians won approval to issue bonds through a city government.

The bill is sponsored by Assemblyman Lou Correa, a Democrat. It faces opposition from county officials who say tribes should be forced to comply with state laws if they want to issue the bonds.
