Program helps Alaska Native students succeed

A partnership between the Cook Inlet Tribal Council and the Anchorage School District is helping Alaska Native students succeed in middle and high school.

The program was started to help students pass an exit exam required for high school graduation. Statewide, Alaska Natives have scored low on the test, with only about half passing.

But through individualized instruction, family involvement and an emphasis on culture, the program has helped 95 percent of Alaska Natives in Anchorage pass the test. Teachers pay close attention to participants, who come from four high schools and middle schools.
