Washington schools, tribes combat drop-out rates

The Department of Education's Office of Indian Education has awarded $2.1 million in grants to help prevent Native students from dropping out of high school.

The Tacoma School District and the Chief Leschi School will use $1.1 million for an after-school program that targets students who have failed courses or are lacking sufficient credits for graduation. Instructors will teach math, language arts, science and history, while counselors will offer career awareness, academic and life-skills support.

The South Puget Intertribal Planning Agency, a non-profit consortium of the Chehalis, Nisqually, Squaxin Island, Skokomish and Shoalwater Bay tribes, will use $1 million for a video conferencing program to allow students to take high school courses.
